Why Should You Pick Mangoes Over Oranges This Summer?

By Sugandha

3 minute read

No don’t come after me if your favorite fruit of all time is orange. All I am trying to get at is eat whatever is in season. Yes, I understand a nice cold glass of freshly squeezed orange juice is just as refreshing as a glass of mango smoothie BUT let’s see some reasons as to why you should consider shopping in the fresh produce aisle instead of the frozen side of your department store.

1. More Nutrients

When you eat foods that are in season, they are often picked at their peak ripeness, meaning they are packed with more nutrients. For example, summer fruits and vegetables like watermelon and tomatoes are high in vitamin C and antioxidants, which can help boost your immune system and protect against disease.

2. Lower Chemical Exposure

Foods that are out of season are often grown in different countries where they are exposed to more chemicals and pesticides in order to preserve them during transportation. Eating seasonally means that you are more likely to consume locally grown produce, which has a lower chance of exposure to harmful chemicals.

3. Better Taste

There’s nothing quite like the taste of fresh, in-season produce! When fruits and vegetables are in season, they are at their peak of freshness and flavor, which can make them taste even more delicious.

4. Supports Your Body’s Natural Rhythms

Seasonal eating can help you stay in tune with your body’s natural rhythms. For example, during the summer months, our bodies naturally crave lighter, refreshing foods like salads and fruits, while in the winter, we tend to crave heartier, warming foods like soups and stews.

5. Variety

Eating seasonally allows you to enjoy a wider variety of foods throughout the year. This can help prevent boredom and encourage you to try new recipes and flavours.

In conclusion, shift to fruits and vegetables based on seasonal availability, you might even be surprised about the money you save buying these things. I usually get things from the Mexican produce market nearby since the Mexico border is close by, and it is always pleasant on the plate, tongue and my wallet.
